Eating out in Egypt runs late: dinner often starts after 20:00, and many restaurants and cafés stay open until midnight and beyond, especially on Thursday nights and in summer. Delivery is everywhere, either by calling the restaurant or through apps such as Talabat and elmenus, sometimes with different prices and offers on each. Many restaurants add a 12 % service charge and 14 % VAT to the bill, so ask for the final price; tipping is customary but optional. During Ramadan the timings shift, with the main rush at iftar and service running on towards suhoor. Egyptian home cooking means dishes such as molokhia, mahshi, fatta, hawawshi, stuffed pigeon and baked rice, and many restaurants cook different dishes on different days of the week, so ask about the dish of the day and portion sizes before ordering, especially for a group.
The business lists hours for all seven days of the week. On most of those days it is open 08:00–01:00. Expect different timings in Ramadan and on public holidays, and a short closure at Friday prayer time in smaller shops. You can reach مطعم الكوخ on 012 2700 0040; calling is the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions, and many businesses in Egypt also answer on WhatsApp.
On Google it holds a rating of 4.3 out of 5 from 3,298 reviews, a strong result for an Egyptian restaurant in Downtown that points to clearly satisfied customers.

It is on the 3rd floor of a hotel. Portions are easily for four to five people if you order the platter. But it is so worth it! The kindest service and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere brings you back in times. Highly recommend!

The restaurant was beautifully decorated, making it a perfect choice for our first night in Cairo. Ziyak took the time to explain the dishes in detail and offered genuine, thoughtful recommendations. He even shared how Egyptians typically dine and gave us insight into the local culture, which made the experience even more special. The food was excellent. We had a grilled set, a beef-stuffed dish, and a traditional Egyptian vegetable dish, and the fruity drinks were delicious. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and well worth it.

Surprisingly the most expensive meal we had in Egypt. Not the best meal we had, food was okay, fresh but the service wasn’t very nice, and when we didn’t get what we expected they were quite rude, i’m sure a language barrier involved which I can’t complain about obviously but definitely felt we were in the wrong when we just asked to check the shakshuka was served as the picture was different, as another review said they just replaced items without telling us. I think better more local options available around cairo but guess this is catering to the tourist population with the inflated price. The prices have increased since the menu we saw in the reviews, as well as the service and tax slapped on at the end made us feel like we paid much more than we thought it was worth. I wouldn’t recommend to friends visiting Cairo. The cafe was little difficult to find as well & have to walk through active construction up 3 levels of stairs.

Al Kokh in Downtown Cairo offers a truly unique experience that goes beyond just dining. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you’ve stepped into another era—an authentic, cozy space filled with warm colors, traditional décor, and charming details that reflect old Egyptian life. The floor seating with beautifully patterned cushions and traditional carpets creates a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. It feels like sitting in a classic Egyptian home—simple, warm, and full of character. The entire place has a calm, artistic vibe that makes it perfect for escaping the busy streets of downtown. The food was very enjoyable—we tried pasta, a burger with fries, along with some dips and sides. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and served in a simple yet appealing way. What truly stands out is the overall ambiance. It’s peaceful, welcoming, and rich in cultural identity. Al Kokh is not just a restaurant—it’s a cozy, authentic experience that brings together good food and the spirit of Egyptian heritage. ✨

The restaurant was nicely decorated and the staff are friendly. However, the food was quite ordinary compared to what Cairo has to offer. We had a mixed starters plate but they replaced some items with deep fried things that were not on the menu. The mains were with little meat and lots of rice. The soup was very tasty and the coconut Ramadan drink was delicious. The amount of tax and service added to the bill at the end and made it more expensive than we thought it was worth.
